MY STORY

Who am I?

  • Founder, Sycamore Whiskey Club

  • Executive Bourbon Steward, Stave and Thief Society, Louisville, KY

  • Award-winning professional brewer

  • Over 25 years of homebrewing experience

  • Over 20 years of teaching classes in homebrewing and the biological/physical sciences

It all started with a homebrew kit from my parents for my 21st birthday back in the mid-90's.  No one was homebrewing at that time and the craft beer scene was in its infancy.  Over the next decade, I dove into learning as much as I could about the brewing process, spent some time as a professional brewer, won some medals at the North American Brewers Association Awards, before realizing that my passion was in education and teaching people.

I spent 15 years as a high school science teacher and taught classes in homebrewing and cooking to adults in my spare time.  My world changed when I was diagnosed with a gluten sensitivity and advised to stop drinking beer.  But, when one door closes, another opens!  It was then that I discovered a passion for all things bourbon: the history, the dubious stories and well-worn legends, the distilling process (which is a LOT like brewing), and all of the wonderful flavors each bourbon provides.  I was also blown away by the amazing whiskey/bourbon community here in northern Illinois and across the internet.

I now spend my time seeking out new whiskies and amazing people to share them with.  I founded the Sycamore Whiskey Club in 2021, which is filled with incredible, knowledgeable people with whom I love to share a pour.  I wanted to take my hobby to the next level, so I became certified as an Executive Bourbon Steward through the Stave and Thief Society in Louisville, KY.  I offer clubs, restaurants, bars, and liquor stores bourbon-themed classes, lead tastings, and help people become Certified Bourbon Stewards.

Since that first homebrewing kit, I have never stopped learning, teaching, discovering new flavors and experiences, and connecting with people who share this interest.  I would love to share my passion with you and your club, staff, or customers on what makes Bourbon our true American Spirit.

Cheers!
